South Carolina defeated UConn 62-48 in the Final Four on Friday. However, Geno Auriemma was furious about the officiating, as he shared his thoughts during the game.
There was a period in the third quarter where Dawn Staley’s South Carolina won six fouls and the Huskies did not win any. This enraged Auriemma when UConn took a timeout, as he did not hold back while reacting to the officiating.
“There were six fouls called that quarter. All of them against us. And they’ve been beating the sh*t outta our guys down there the entire game. And I am not making excuses because we haven’t been able to make a shot. But this is ridiculous. Their coach rants and raves on the sideline and calls the referee some names you don’t want to hear. And now we get 6 to 0, and I got a kid with a ripped jersey. And they go I didn’t see it. Come on, man, it’s Final Four, national championship,” Geno Auriemma furiously expressed.
UConn and South Carolina treated fans with a blockbuster of a game. Auriemma and Staley produced another high-quality battle in the high-octane, high-energy, high-intensity Final Four game. From the get-go, both teams looked motivated and willing to win. UConn led at halftime despite its stars not producing much. However, South Carolina came back strong to register the win.
Sarah Strong rips her jersey after a missed lay-up
After Sarah Strong drove through the line, she was pushed wide by a South Carolina defender, which led to her losing her balance. She missed the lay-up in this action. The timeout was called after that, and Sarah was visibly frustrated.
In that frustration of not making the shot or probably not getting a possible foul, Sarah ripped her jersey while walking towards the dugout. She had to wear the jersey No. 55 for the rest of the game.
UConn ultimately failed to beat South Carolina’s physicality. It was a rather poor game for Azzi Fudd and Sarah Strong. The duo scored just 7/31 from the field and combined for only 20 points.
South Carolina, on the other hand, did not see a drop in their intensity even once. Ta’Niya Latson led the charge with a tremendous double-double, recording 16 points and 11 rebounds, which led to South Carolina’s 62-48 victory.
