Two storied women’s basketball coaches clash in the Final Four once again as Dawn Staley has the chance to get her revenge on Geno Auriemma and the UConn Huskies after she lost in the national championship game in 2025. This begs the question, how do they fare against one another in a head-to-head?
Dawn Staley vs Geno Auriemma Coaching Records and Titles
Geno Auriemma is the winningest coach in women’s college basketball history with an overall record of 1,288-165 since he started coaching the Huskies in the 1985-86 season. He holds the record for most NCAA championships won for any college coach in the sport of basketball with 12.
As for Dawn Staley, she only started coaching at Temple in 2000 after her WNBA career wrapped up. She currently has a record of 682-193 with three NCAA championships to her name. Her win percentage is at 77.9%, which is lower than Auriemma’s, who is at 88.6%.
Dawn Staley vs Geno Auriemma Head-to-Head
Dawn Staley and Geno Auriemma have met 14 times throughout their careers, three of which were in the NCAA Tournament. Auriemma leads 9-5, with South Carolina being only able to win once in the NCAA Tournament over UConn, and that was in 2022, when the Gamecocks won their second NCAA title.
This means that Auriemma has the edge over Staley, but he does not really have her number as Staley has shown that she could beat Auriemma more often than other coaches.
South Carolina vs. UConn Final Four Key Matchups
Their Final Four showdown will feature teams with the deepest benches in women’s basketball, with starters who could be star players on any other team. Both teams have demolished their opponents by large margins so far in the tournament and there is a feel of an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object.
The guard matchup between UConn’s Azzi Fudd and South Carolina’s Raven Johnson should be the most interesting matchup, as Johnson is a defensive aficionado and playmaker while Fudd is a near-unstoppable scorer when she gets going.
For the forwards, it will undoubtedly be Joyce Edwards vs. Sarah Strong, with both players being dominant all season long. KK Arnold vs. Ta’Niya Latson at guard should also be interesting.
