Kamilla Cardoso made some WNBA history on Friday night as she set the new record for most consecutive field goals made without a miss in the Chicago Sky’s win over the Portland Fire. Now, Dawn Staley seems to be crediting a key South Carolina Gamecocks staff member for the success Cardoso is having.
After Cardoso said a halftime text from Staley told her it was going to be one of those nights where everything worked, the Gamecocks’ head coach refused to take full credit, instead giving it to her associate head coach, Lisa Boyer.
“I can’t take credit for this. @Coachboyer willed @Kamillascsilva to a @WNBA record and a career high! ‘Sky’ is not the limit….consider being great Kmill!” Staley wrote on the social media platform, X.
This comes after Dawn Staley already reacted to Cardoso’s moment publicly earlier, showing her excitement as one of her own made WNBA history.
Kamilla Cardoso and Dawn Staley Have Tasted Success Together at South Carolina
Kamilla Cardoso and Dawn Staley’s strong bond comes because of the experiences they have shared together as player and coach. Under Staley, Cardoso won the NCAA championship twice, first in 2022 and then in 2024, with the latter also coming with the Most Outstanding Player award for Cardoso.
After being picked third in the 2024 WNBA draft, Cardoso has become a key component in the Chicago Sky lineup, with arguably her best moment in the WNBA so far coming with the setting of the new record on Friday.
