Todd Monken’s Browns Hire Draws Skepticism as Emmanuel Acho Questions Shedeur Sanders’ Development

Shedeur Sanders’ Cleveland Browns hired Todd Monken as their next head coach yesterday. The hiring came weeks after Kevin Stefanski was fired by the franchise following another disappointing season run.

The expectations from Monken in his new role are endless. He’s now part of an organization that has struggled to win games and make the playoffs in recent years. As head coach, Monken would be expected to get them over the hump.

The problem is that no one seems to have any trust in Monken. He’s not an experienced NFL coach. In fact, this will be his first stint as a head coach for an NFL franchise. He has coached positions for decades, but has no resume to show for it as the leader of the pack.

That detail has made fans, former players, and analysts question whether he’s the right fit for the franchise. More importantly, for some people, Monken isn’t the right coach to develop Shedeur Sanders into a top-level quarterback.

Emmanuel Acho, who retired in 2015, recently shared his thoughts on the Browns’ new hire on an episode of Speakeasy. Acho believes that fans shouldn’t expect anything from Sanders under Monken, as it’ll lead to disappointment.

“There is nothing about Todd Monken as a head coach that should get you excited,” he said. “I need to see who the offensive coordinator is going to be. That’s what I need to see.”

Acho stated that Monken has a respectable resume as an offensive coordinator, but nothing as a head coach. He even said that it’ll be difficult for players to respect Monken and follow his advice because he hasn’t won anything in the NFL as a head coach.

What Acho is forgetting is that the Browns have made just two playoff appearances since 2002. They’re a struggling franchise with problems that haven’t been solved in decades. In the last decade, they’ve seen a double-digit win season just twice, and the less said about the 2017-18 season, the better.

While Acho might not be the saviour they were looking for, he’s worth giving a chance because coaches aren’t exactly lining up to join the Cleveland Browns franchise.

Skip Bayless is Worried about Shedeur Sanders’ Future

Hours after Monken was announced as the head coach, Skip Bayless posted a video on X, talking about why he’s a bad hire for the Browns and, more importantly, Shedeur Sanders. Bayless’s reason wasn’t as game-focused as Acho’s.

Bayless wondered, “WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO BLACK HEAD COACHES?” and added, “I wanted a young Black coach over Todd Monken for Shedeur.” Bayless believes Monken’s race somehow plays a role in Sanders’ development.

“Does Todd Monken believe in Shedeur Sanders as the future? I have no idea. And I’m not saying this would be a disaster for Shedeur, but Todd Monken obviously is an older white coach,” he said.

Safe to say, Monken will start as a bigger underdog than he’d have expected to be.
