The Cleveland Browns ended their head coaching search yesterday after hiring Todd Monken for the role. Shedeur Sanders has already expressed his excitement over the new hire and has shown willingness to work with the coach.
Monken was not on the wish list of Cleveland fans. Considering the rough stretch they’ve experienced over the last few years, they were looking for someone with more credibility and a proven track record.
While Sanders has made it clear that he’s ready to work with Monken, the new head coach hasn’t received the same support from the fans. Skip Bayless is also on the fans’ side with this decision.
He recently posted a long video on X, talking about Monken being hired as the Browns coach and expressing his disappointment over the same. Bayless stated that hiring Nathan Scheelhaase would’ve been a better choice.
Other than the replacement on his mind, Bayless made a slightly controversial statement in the caption of his post.
“WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO BLACK HEAD COACHES? I wanted a young Black coach over Todd Monken for Shedeur,” he wrote.
He was asked by fans what a coach’s color has to do with their ability to coach players, especially quarterbacks. Bayless also spoke on the tension that existed between Shedeur Sanders and former head coach Kevin Stefanski.
“They tried Dillon Gabriel with Kevin Stefanski at the helm, who was not a fan of Shedeur,” he said. “They hung in with Dillon Gabriel as long as they could until the public outcry got to the point where Jimmy Haslam stepped in.”
Bayless claimed that Haslam instructed Stefanski to start with Sanders. After that, he went 3-4 in seven starts, which Bayless considers to be acceptable.
Skip Bayless is Worried About Shedeur Sanders’ Future with Todd Monken
Bayless believes that a head coach must have faith in Shedeur Sanders for the franchise to succeed. He’s well known for his love for the quarterback, so it’s not surprising that he’s thinking more about Sanders than the Browns.
In his opinion, if Nathan Scheelhaase got the head coaching job, he’d have trusted Sanders to take the franchise forward. As for Monken, Bayless seemed to be a bit obsessed with his race.
“Does Todd Monken believe in Shedeur Sanders as the future? I have no idea. And I’m not saying this would be a disaster for Shedeur but Todd Monken obviously is an older white coach.”
Bayless’s criticism or doubt was misdirected. Monken’s resume is not strong. He doesn’t have any prior head coaching experience in the NFL and has only coached one college program for a short period.
