WNBA Draft First Overall Picks By College: Which School Has Produced The Biggest Stars?

It is finally time for the WNBA draft, with the event happening live from New York City later today. There is plenty of hype as the No. 1 pick is still up in the air, as the Dallas Wings are torn between Spanish center Awa Fam and UConn guard Azzi Fudd. Fam is a dominant center making waves in the international scene, while Fudd is a formidable guard and is a proven scorer who plays well with her girlfriend, Wings superstar Paige Bueckers.

While Dallas decides on who to pick at No. 1 overall, should they go for Fudd, this would extend UConn’s achievement as the school with the highest number of No. 1 overall picks in the WNBA draft. Geno Auriemma has been proven to be big on developing future stars, and Azzi Fudd could join her girlfriend, Bueckers, in that elite list. So, which schools have produced the most No. 1 picks?

WNBA Draft No. 1 Picks By School

    UConn Huskies: 6

    • Sue Bird (2002)
    • Diana Taurasi (2004)
    • Tina Charles (2010)

    • Paige Bueckers (2025)

Schools/ Countries With Only 1 No. 1 Pick

    • Washington: Kelsey Plum (2017)
    • Oregon: Sabrina Ionescu (2020)
    • Texas: Charli Collier (2021)
    • Kentucky: Rhyne Howard (2022)
    • Iowa: Caitlin Clark (2024)

Should Awa Fam go No. 1, she would be the first Spaniard picked No. 1 overall in the WNBA draft. Meanwhile, with Azzi Fudd, UConn would extend its record with seven No. 1 overall picks. Fam would be the logical pick, according to some mock drafts, while Fudd would be the emotional pick, as it would reunite one of the most potent backcourt combinations in college basketball, plus it would make their superstar happy.

One surprise would be Dallas going with TCU’s Olivia Miles, who is projected to go No. 2, no matter if Dallas goes with Fam or Fudd. The Wings do not need another guard right now, but might make an exception for Fudd and might make some trades in order to reunite her with her girlfriend.
