Dawn Staley was back supporting her South Carolina Gamecocks crew as she appeared on the sidelines for the WNBA clash between the Las Vegas Aces and the Indiana Fever, and a curious interaction between Staley and her former protege in A’ja Wilson is now taking the internet by storm.
Dawn Staley routinely turns up for WNBA games where a bunch of former South Carolina players are in action, and that was the intention once again, as she cheered her former players on inside the Michelob Ultra Arena, but perhaps A’ja Wilson noticed her at just the wrong time, almost interrupting her warm ups to say hi to a coach that means so much to her.
Wilson was warming up for the big game when she noticed coach Staley sitting near her, and appeared in two minds about whether she should go say hi or concentrate on preparing for the game. Just as Wilson tries to go and say hello, Dawn Staley shoos her away, asking her to focus on prepping for the big game that was about to begin.
But it wasn’t the only interaction the duo would have, later meeting properly and Staley celebrating with Wilson and other South Carolina players after the game was done.
Dawn Staley Responds to A’ja Wilson’s “Softer” Remark
Dawn Staley recently responded to A’ja Wilson’s comment that the Gamecocks coach had “gotten softer” with time in how she deals with players.
“Have I gotten softer? I’ve gotten smarter, right,” Staley said.
“Because you can’t allow them to beat you at their game, I’m beating them at their game. A’ja [Wilson’s] probably gotten softer too…now that she got a man, right? She got a little softer. But I will say this – I really enjoy young people. I enjoy taking the journey with them for them finding themselves. And it’s such a cool process and a cool dynamic helping them find out who they really are.”
