After helping the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have a deep run in March Madness, Filipina guard Vanessa de Jesus is testing her luck in the WNBA. She is projected to go late in the draft, but she could also surprise many if she gets picked earlier. As the leader of the Philippine national team, she is also expected to represent the Philippines when it comes to the draft, so expect a lot of people from her home country cheering for her.
De Jesus averaged 8.4 points, 2.7 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game for Notre Dame last season, along with 1.8 steals per game. She can be a threat on both ends of the floor as she can clamp down on opponents on one end while also sinking shots from deep on the other. She can also be a good playmaker, finding the open teammate or facilitating plays.
Teams That Could Target Vanessa de Jesus During the WNBA Draft
Golden State Valkyries
They currently have Kate Martin as guard so Golden State could go for multiple guards in the draft to back her up. Vanessa de Jesus could be a good guard coming off the bench during her rookie year, and this could also be a good business move given the sheer number of Filipinos living in the Bay Area.
New York Liberty
The New York Liberty is known for their lights out outside shooters, so adding a younger player to back them up and learn from them should be a very good decision. The Fighting Irish guard has shown she could light up the scoreboard, scoring a career-high 22 points, three rebounds, and three steals in a win over Fairleigh Dickinson last year, so getting a guard like that to learn under Sabrina Ionescu could be a good move for the future.
Portland Fire
The Fire are a new team so it is still not known how well they will gel. However, they seem to lack some fast guards, and Vanessa de Jesus could provide that speed along with some good shooting.
