Tessa Johnson is arguably one of the best players on the South Carolina Gamecocks roster. She is having the best season of her college career, and the Gamecocks are stacking up one win after another.
They recently defeated the Ole Miss Rebels, 85-48, and clinched at least a tie for the championship. This was their eighth win in a row, and they’re at the top of the SC table with 13 wins and one loss in the conference, and 27 wins overall.
Johnson has shown great improvement as compared to the last two seasons, and she has been praised by her coach and teammates for the same. However, even the great players have some bad outings, and Johnson had hers against Ole Miss.
She scored just three points in 23 minutes with six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. The biggest problem for Johnson on the field was her shooting. She shot 1 of 5 from the field and 1 of 3 from the three-point line.
So, after the game, when the rest of the team was likely celebrating the blowout win, Johnson was on the court, doing her shooting drills. Chaz R Frazier posted a clip of her on X, which impressed a lot of fans.
“Super Star,” a fan wrote.
“This right here tells you about HER!!!” a fan wrote.
“Probably Explains Why She Graduated In 2 1/2 Years!!! 👏🏾 She’s Just Wired Different!!! Student Athletes Like This Are Very Rare!! @tessajohnsonnn Future Is Beyond Bright!! She’s Built With The Right Foundation! This World Needs More,” a fan wrote.
“When my sister has a bad game she gets straight in the gym. Next game magnet ball,” a fan wrote.
“STANDING ON BUSINESS!!” a fan wrote.
“Only 3 Points The Last Two Games ! She Going OFF The Next One,” a fan wrote.
Johnson has been praised for her dedication and relentless attitude toward practice. This instance can be added to the long list of such examples.
Dawn Staley Praised Tessa Johnson
It’s not only the numbers that show the giant leap that Johnson has taken this season. The fans have noticed that growth, and Dawn Staley has applauded her for the same as well.
Staley is known for setting high standards for her players, so if she heaps praise on someone, it’s the best compliment a player can receive.
“Tessa is our rock,” she said early in the season. “She is the person that is not pressing but she’s confident in her ability to go get a bucket when she wants to get a bucket. She’s just taking what the defense gives her.”
The Ole Miss game was likely a small setback for Johnson, and once she figures out why she was missing shots, she’ll be back to putting up big numbers on the board.
