Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks registered a blowout 85-48 win over the Ole Miss Rebels. The Gamecocks are number one seed in the SC with a 27-2 overall record and 13-1 in the conference.
Joyce Edwards, Madina Okot, and Ta’Niya Latson scored points in double digits, with Okot registering another double-double this season. But it was Raven Johnson who stole the show at the post-game press conference.
Staley went for the post-game presser and was answering questions from reporters present in the room. Suddenly, a familiar face showed up with a microphone and a question for the Gamecocks’ head coach.
Raven Johnson snuck in to ask a question which Staley might not have answered before.
“Coach, tell me how you approach games and you look good while doing it. You’re at the sidelines with your fits on, just tell me what’s your mindset going into the games?”
“My mindset going into the game is, what would Raven think?” Staley responded. “If there aren’t any complaints from Raven, I think I’ve passed the test.”
Johnson immediately walked away as the reporters laughed at the banter between Johnson and her head coach. But that wasn’t the end of it. There was something else that Staley wanted to tell her.
“Whoever gave her that question, thank you, because what she probably wanted to ask would’ve been censored,” Staley said.
Johnson joined the South Carolina Gamecocks in 2021, and over the years, she has established a great relationship with Staley.
Dawn Staley Talked to Raven Johnson’s Boyfriend on His Draft Day
During an appearance on SEC Now, Staley revealed that she talked to Johnson’s boyfriend, Nick Emmanwori, safety for the Seattle Seahawks. Emmanwori was the second round, 35th overall pick by the Seahawks.
On his draft day, he was expected to be a first round pick. So, when he started slipping, Johnson got really worried. But fortunately, she was in touch with Staley, who helped her calm down. Staley also talked to Emmanwori and explain to him that he will be picked by the right team.
“Raven was FaceTiming me all throughout Nick’s draft night,” Staley said. “You know Raven. She’s like ‘I don’t know what to say, I don’t know what to do. He’s supposed to go earlier.’ If you know Raven, she’s very funny but she was very concerned,” Staley said.
Staley said that she had to “talk her off the ledge” first before talking to Emmanwori. He was picked by the right team eventually and went on to win a Super Bowl with them this year.
