Is Raven Johnson Injured? Reason Behind Dawn Staley’s Top Star’s Reduced Minutes Explained

South Carolina Gamecocks guard Raven Johnson was going in and out of the court during her team’s most recent regular-season game, which sparked injury concerns among fans. On Thursday, Feb. 19, Johnson and the rest of Dawn Staley’s Gamecocks faced Kristy Curry’s Alabama Crimson Tide at the latter’s home arena, the Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

During the much-anticipated game, however, collegiate basketball reporter Lulu Kesin’s posts on X/Twitter pointed out that Johnson was inconsistent with her usual minutes logged during games. According to Kesin, the game’s broadcast reported that Johnson was feeling sick, which may have forced Staley to limit her gametime.

Although Johnson played limited minutes against the Crimson Tide, the Gamecocks beat them 76-57 in away territory. This gave South Carolina its 26th win of the year in just 28 games played (12-1 SEC), as they continue to be the top team in the current SEC standings. Staley, Johnson, and the rest of the Gamecocks are looking to avenge their 2025 national championship game loss this year.

During Her Post-Game Interview, Dawn Staley Confirmed That Raven Johnson Had Her Flu Game

During an interview after the win over the Alabama Crimson Tide, Dawn Staley confirmed that Raven Johnson was feeling ill throughout the game.

This was revealed when Staley was asked about her evaluation of her team, as both the 2026 SEC and NCAA tournaments are nearing.

“ Well, I think we had a little bit of fatigue, you know, just from playing the LSU game on Saturday. We, I mean, we got a little bit more rest than we usually get during the week, so that might have backfired on us a little bit. Raven fought through. Raven was sick today. We don’t even know if she was gonna play, but she braved through and play like the champion that she is,” Staley shared.
