The Toronto Tempo head coach, Sandy Brondello, has been under the cosh after a controversial comment about Angel Reese. During the Tempo vs Dream game on Saturday, July 18, a mic caught Brondello ranting to the referees, “Angel, she’s a protected species.”
Brondello faced a lot of backlash after the comment. She realised the impact of her comment and how it was offensive. She posted an apology on her X account. South Carolina coach Dawn Staley appreciated the apology and dropped a three-word message.
“A real apology,” Staley posted.
Tempo head coach was apologetic for her comment during the game.
“Angel, I’m sorry. Last night, in the emotion of the moment after Nyara’s injury, I used a phrase that I shouldn’t have used, and I take full responsibility for that. My frustration was with the officiating, but my words unfairly put the focus on you,” she said.
“I also understand that my words carried an impact beyond what I intended, particularly for Black women in our league, and I’m deeply sorry for that. I’ve spent my career competing with, coaching and learning from incredible Black women,” she said.
She also said that she regretted that her words caused hurt to the Black community. She expressed that she deeply respects them as well as Angel Reese as both a player and a person.
“I sincerely apologize to you, your teammates, and the Dream organization for my comment,” she said.
