The South Carolina Gamecocks are cruising through the NCAA women’s basketball regular season with an overall record of 25-2 so far while also topping the Southeastern Conference standings.
A major component of the South Carolina-based side’s performance could be attributed to its standout guard Raven Johnson’s contribution to the side. The senior guard currently averages 10.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, and a team-high 5.4 assists per game, which has helped the Gamecocks at this point continue their six-game unbeaten streak.
A major part of any athlete’s life is their familial support filled with sacrifices, relentless backing, and encouragement. Raven Johnson’s story isn’t any different.
After being introduced to the sport at the tender age of five by her grandfather Rodrick Bonne, Raven hasn’t looked back ever since. Bonne, who also happens to be a retired military officer, quite clearly had a lot of influence on Johnson’s career.
One of Johnson’s biggest supporters in both on- and off-court life is her mother, Shekia Johnson. While there are not many personal details around Shekia, she has been a constant part of Johnson’s support system, whether it be helping Johnson travel gym to gym or cheering her from the sidelines.
Publicly, there is no information around Raven Johnson’s father. Her family also includes Uncle Richard, who is supposedly Shekia’s twin brother.
Raven Johnson Honors Her Mother’s Sacrifices With Heartfelt Gesture
Raven time and again has emphasized how much her mother, Shekia, has sacrificed, not only for her basketball career, but for her brothers and the entire family.
This prompted Raven to save her NIL money and gift her mom a Nissan, a small reward that the point guard thinks she “owes” to her No. 1 supporter considering her mom’s relentless support and sacrifice.
“She does so much for me, I owe her a car,” Johnson told in an interview with The Greenville News in 2025 .
“She sacrificed so much for me, my brothers and our family overall. I owe her that car, that moment. It was very surreal, seeing her so happy and the smile on her face. It made me light up”, she further elaborated.
Meanwhile on the court, Johnson’s excellent form has primed the Gamecocks to be one of the favorites this season to go all the way to potentially winning a natty.
