Tessa Johnson and Raven Johnson led the South Carolina Gamecocks to a thrilling 79-72 win against the LSU Tigers yesterday. The Gamecocks extended their winning streak to six games and handed LSU its fourth loss of the season.
After a slow start, South Carolina dominated in the second half and walked away with a comfortable win. Tessa Johnson led the team in scoring, dropping 21 points in 37 minutes.
She shot 8 of 13 from the field and 4 of 5 from the three-point line. Raven Johnson followed up with 19 points, shooting 4 of 9 from the field, and 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. Raven shot 8 of 10 from the charity stripe as well.
Needless to say, the Gamecocks celebrated this win. Tessa and Raven, the two scoring leaders from the LSU game, took their celebrations to TikTok. Tessa posted a video with Raven, dancing in sync to a song.
Center Madina Okot had the most impactful outing against LSU. She dropped 12 points with 17 rebounds and didn’t commit a single turnover.
“Madina has been ramping up. Ever since we took the pressure off of her for two games (coming off the bench), we decided that she didn’t have a choice, and she had to get back in the starting lineup. I think she made big plays for us. She rebounded consistently out there and made probably the biggest play of the game,” Staley said about Okot.
Staley said that she felt very proud of her as she has been through a lot of difficult situations this season, and the performance against the LSU Tigers is one of the season highlights for her.
Dawn Staley Praised Tessa and Raven Johnson
The South Carolina Gamecocks head coach was very pleased with her team’s overall performance. During the media interaction, she was asked about the two guards who led the team’s offense.
“They had to (play a lot of minutes), when you’re down in volume without Maddy McDaniel, you’ve got to. Obviously, a lot more than we wanted them to play, and we did try to get them a little break before timeouts. But they’re built for it,” she said.
“I think if they could have gotten a couple of other blows throughout the second half, they might have had enough energy to make some more slow plays down the stretch, but they were exhausted. They got us over the mountain top,” she added.
The Gamecocks will play the Alabama Crimson Tide on February 19.
