Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks have been on a six-game winning streak. They recently defeated the LSU Tigers on the road and took a one-game advantage over Vanderbilt to claim the top spot in SC.
Raven Johnson had a brilliant outing with a complete performance, scoring 19 points with seven rebounds and six assists in 36 minutes. Johnson is a two-time NCAA Champion and has spent her entire college career under Staley.
They share a great relationship, and Staley has said that she’ll miss Johnson when she moves up to join the WNBA. The bond between them also helped Staley choose her team to root for during the Super Bowl.
Johnson is dating Seattle Seahawks safety Nick Emmanwori. Staley was seen wearing Emmanwori’s jersey on the sidelines. When she was asked about her pick, she said, “I gotta go with Ray Ray’s man.”
Emmanwori recently made an appearance on The Pivot Podcast, where he was asked about getting Staley’s co-sign.
“Dawn Staley…she’s a GOAT,” Emmanwori said. “She’s been doing it for a long time as a player and as a coach. The fact that she gave me that little shout out, wore my jersey on the sideline, that was definitely like, big ups.”
Emmanwori said that Staley is an Eagles fan, but she still wore his jersey, and it means a lot to him.
“She’s a great person, and she’s got all the swag and all the personality that she needs, so a lot of respect for that,” he added.
With Staley’s support, the Seahawks were able to defeat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl and win the title. Emmanwori, at the age of 22, is now a Super Bowl champion.
Dawn Staley Talked to Nick Emmanwori on Draft Day
During an appearance on SEC Now, Staley detailed how stressed Raven Johnson was on draft day as Emmanwori was about to get selected. Emmanwori was the second round, 35th overall pick by the Seattle Seahawks.
“Raven was FaceTiming me all throughout Nick’s draft night,” Staley said. “You know Raven. She’s like ‘I don’t know what to say, I don’t know what to do. He’s supposed to go earlier.’ If you know Raven, she’s very funny but she was very concerned,” Staley said.
She had to “talk her off the ledge” first and then talk to Emmanwori. Staley told him that he needed to be patient and wait for the right team, the team that needed his talent the most, to pick him.
