Can Kim Mulkey’s LSU Pull Off An Upset Against Texas? Breaking Down The Key Matchups

The last time Texas and LSU took on one another, it happened in Baton Rouge and Kim Mulkey’s squad handed the Longhorns their first loss of the season back in January. Now, their rematch will be happening at the Moody Center, and Texas wants to avenge their 70-65 road loss, with the contest between the No. 4 Texas Longhorns and the No. 5 LSU Tigers coming in with a lot of hype.

Despite winning in their previous game, the Tigers find themselves as the underdogs coming into this contest, especially with this being held in the Longhorns’ home court. They do have a good chance to win despite being underdogs though, as they have shown that they have the ability to beat Texas and contain their offense.

    LSU vs. Texas Key Matchups

    Point Guards

The biggest threat for LSU will be Texas point guard Rori Harmon, who has been red-hot since the Longhorns lost to the Tigers back in January. The LSU defense held her to just two points and three assists last time, but this time should be different, with LSU guards Mikayla Williams or Jada Richard possibly having to do extra to defend her this time around.

    Bigs

For the bigs, this is the matchup LSU should be confident that they could pull off, as Kim Mulkey is known for developing some very good frontline players. Freshman Grace Knox is still finding her bearings but has been great so far, and Amiya Joyner has been unstoppable as the center or the power forward. They should be able to handle Madison Booker no problem, and this frontline could be the key to the Tigers winning the game.

    Bench

Bench-wise, LSU also has the better bench, with MiLaysia Fulwiley being one of the best reserves in college WBB around, while rookie ZaKiyah Johnson showing that she is a future star as well. Texas’ Kyla Oldacre may be able to challenge LSU’s bigs though, as she dropped 16 rebounds the last time these two teams faced off, and she also had three blocks.

    X Factors

Senior guard and rapper Flau’jae Johnson will be the big X-factor for the Tigers as usual, as she is known to be a scoring machine who couild also grab some boards and play defense. She will be matched possibly against Jordan Lee, who dropped 12 on the Tigers last time. Lee could explode big for the Longhorns and hand them the home win.
