The UConn Huskies registered a one-sided 96-66 win over Tennessee last Sunday. However, head coach Geno Auriemma was still a bit unhappy with some of his players, especially after several admitted they had forgotten what he said to them at halftime.
Auriemma asked reporters for the names of the players who had forgotten what he said, and one reporter revealed that they were Sarah Strong, Azzi Fudd and Kayleigh Heckel. They later clarified that Strong actually remembered. To this, the coaching legend expressed his disappointment:
“Do you know how many smart players we actually have on our team,?” Auriemma asked. “One. That’s of course, she (Sarah Strong) would remember. The other two, if you’d have told me like Allie (Ziebell) was in here and she didn’t remember, I would be really disappointed.”
Auriemma is known to demand the best from his players, and his record as the winningest coach in basketball speaks for itself. He now has over 1,200 career wins, including a record 12 national championships.
Tennessee and Geno Auriemma’s UConn Were Tied Heading Into Halftime, But Huskies Turned It Into a Rout
This was supposed to be a competitive rivalry game between two historic programs, especially as Tennessee defeated UConn last year. The Volunteers kept it close and tied the game at the end of the first half.
However, during the halftime break, whatever Geno Auriemma said fired up the Huskies as they went on to demolish the Vols by 30 points.
Azzi Fudd had 27 points, seven assists, seven rebounds and four steals to lead the Huskies, while Sarah Strong had 26 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks. UConn remains undefeated at 23-0 after the game.
The Huskies will take on DePaul on Wednesday as they look to take another step towards an undefeated regular season. UConn is 27-0 against DePaul under Auriemma, including a 102-35 dismantling on Dec. 7 in Gampel Pavilion in their last meeting.
