The upcoming showdown between the LSU Tigers and the South Carolina Gamecocks is not just a rivalry between two SEC powerhouses, but also between two of the greatest female coaches in college basketball history. They will be relying on several key players, and for Kim Mulkey, one of them is definitely star guard Flau’jae Johnson.
Ahead of the big showdown between Kim Mulkey’s Tigers and Dawn Staley’s Gamecocks, Johnson sounded off on her motivation in playing against their division rivals.
“I’ve had enough of them, so that’s motivation in itself,” Flau’jae Johnson said.
She was then asked if she was ready to take on South Carolina, and here is what she answered:
“Oh I’ve been ready. I woke up this morning and I thought it was game day!” she said with a smile.

The senior guard, who is also a well-known rapper, averages 13.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game, with a field goal percentage of 47.2%. She is coming off a stellar performance in that win against Auburn, where she scored 10 points, seven rebounds and had four assists.
South Carolina is currently ranked No. 3 in the country with a 24-2 record, while LSU is No. 6, with a 22-3 record, with the Gamecocks being considered the best team in the SEC. However, the game will be held at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, which means the Tigers get the homecourt advantage against Dawn Staley’s crew.
Flau’jae Johnson Already Looking Forward to LSU vs. South Carolina Rivalry Game
Ahead of the South Carolina game, Flau’jae Johnson acknowledged how big the game will be when she spoke with Alicia Jay on “We Need To Talk.” She stated that she cleared everything she had this week just so she could focus on that game against the South Carolina Gamecocks on Sunday.
“I don’t have anything but my weekly schedule. So, for next Sunday, I’ll do my whole week for next week, but I’ve got to be where my feet are because that’s my focus,” she said. “But also, obviously, it’s a big game. It’s going to be one of the biggest games, I feel like, in women’s basketball history. I feel like it’s going to be a largely-watched, highly-anticipated game.”
She added that she is aware that a lot of people will be tuning in and praised Dawn Staley for having a great program over at South Carolina. She concluded that she is very excited to play that game as both LSU and South Carolina have “great teams.”
