LSU Tigers guard Flau’jae Johnson joked with her coach, Kim Mulkey, after their most recent postseason game.
On Sunday, March 22, Johnson and the rest of coach Mulkey’s Tigers beat coach Krista Gerlich’s Texas Tech Lady Raiders 101-47 in the second round of Regional 2 in Sacramento in this year’s Big Dance on the former’s home floor, the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The Sporting News on X/Twitter shared a clip from Johnson and Mulkey’s post-game press conference. Johnson was asked for her thoughts on playing under Mulkey. The player said it’s an honor for her, before joking about Mulkey’s age. Mulkey responded with a hilarious comment of her own about Johnson’s starting lineup spot.
“ It’s an honor because she’s been coaching for like a hundred years and… I’m just kidding. I’m just kidding. I’m just playing. I’m just playing. Not that long, not that long,” Johnson said, with Mulkey jokingly replying, “You just lost your starting job, sister.”
Fortunately for Johnson, Mulkey, and the rest of the LSU faithful, they dominated the Lady Raiders by an astounding 54 points, 101-47, to advance into the Sweet 16 of this year’s March Madness. The Louisiana-based program is aiming to win its second national title, after it won its first in the 2023 NCAA tournament when Johnson was still in her first year.
Flau’jae Johnson Asserts That Kim Mulkey Has “Molded” Her Into The Player She Is Today
In the same video, Flau’jae Johnson said Kim Mulkey has made her into the player she is today.
Johnson said this after expressing gratitude for the compliments Mulkey made about her, and doubled down that the kind of player she is today is due to Mulkey’s hard-nosed coaching over the years.
“ I’ve learned so much from coach Mulkey, and she really molded me into the player I am today. Honestly, me from my freshman year until now, like my mental, you know what I’m saying? Like that’s all a testament to coach Mulkey and you know, I told her like, ‘Coach me hard, coach us hard, and you know what I’m saying?’ I feel like we, everybody kind of bought in, and this is the result you get, you know?” Johnson explained (0:32).
