You have probably seen Dawn Staley pine and cry about departing players or fellow coaches. What you probably haven’t seen her do is express sadness at the loss of a physical object. Yet this is exactly what she did this Wednesday on her Instagram feed, saying goodbye to her trusty backpack.
The backpack, it seems, judging by her comment on the caption section, accompanied her during her last two national championship wins in 2022 and 2024. Here’s her farewell message to her trusty backpack:
“We are in a no judgment zone. 🤣🤣🤣It so hard to say goodbye to a bag I carried for 6 years now. It owes me nothing but was everything to me. Thank for the memories and the championships but it is time to move on…only because zippers are shot! 🥹🥹🥹On deck….enclosed! 🥰🥰,”
The post showed several pictures of the ‘2022 Women’s Final Four’ backpack, showing all that she fitted in there. From clothing to food and books.
Last season, Dawn Staley took the South Carolina Gamecocks to yet another NCAA Tournament championship game. They fell there for the second season in a row, this time around to the UCLA Bruins. The Gamecocks have made the Final Four every season since 2021.
Dawn Staley on how she got Oliviyah Edwards to commit to South Carolina
Dawn Staley recently spoke with The State about how she was able to get Oliviyah Edwards, a five-star recruit and one of the top prospects in the class of 2026, to come to South Carolina.
Initially, Edwards committed to Tennessee, but it seems she always had South Carolina on her mind, as she was gracious enough to call Staley and share her decision. The Gamecocks had the bad luck of being later on her visit schedule:
“She was supposed to come visit us before she committed to Tennessee,” Staley told The State. “She called me on her Tennessee visit to tell me that she’s committing [to Tennessee].”
But once she decommitted, Dawn Staley thinks that, naturally, the Gamecocks came back to mind. And according to the coach, South Carolina just executed this time around.
“We were on her list. Quite naturally, you just kind of go down the list,” Staley told The State. “…Once we were able to talk to her, we weren’t the only school that she talked to. She was talking to a few of us.”
“I just felt like our coaches, our administrators, our players did a really great job when she came on her visit,” Staley said
Now, Dawn Staley and South Carolina have the fifth-best player in the class of 2026 in their pocket.
