Flau’jae Johnson’s LSU Tigers are set to take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge. The Tigers are coming off a blowout 116-58 win against the Jacksonville Dolphins.
Johnson, who joined the program in 2022, is on her last run with LSU. Johnson won the NCAA title with the Tigers in 2023, and she is trying to add another piece of silverware to her trophy cabinet before she moves on to the WNBA.
During a recent media interaction, Johnson spoke on some of the things that she will miss, and Louisiana music was at the top of her list.
“The music, I’m gonna miss the music,” she said.
She credited some of her teammates for introducing her to new music. Johnson also praised the Louisiana culture and said that she’s going to miss a lot of things about the place.
Just because she’ll be leaving Louisiana soon doesn’t mean Johnson will leave her music behind as well. She said that “she’s gonna her bounce music with her to wherever she gets drafted in the WNBA Draft,” as per USA Today’s Cory Diaz.
While establishing herself as one of the best basketball players in the country, Johnson has also worked on her music career. She was inspired to pursue a rap career to continue her father’s legacy.
She released her first EP titled ‘It’s a Situation 4 Pack Mix Series Vol. 1’ in 2022 under her own label. Johnson has released three more EPs and three albums in the last four years. She has also bagged a deal with Roc Nation.
To top it all off, she has a song with arguably one of the greatest rappers of all time, Lil Wayne, who is also a Louisiana native.
Kim Mulkey on Why She Gets Emotional About Flau’jae Johnson
Johnson joined the LSU program a year after Kim Mulkey took over as head coach. She has developed into a world-class player under Mulkey, and they’ve also formed a great relationship over the last few years.
Mulkey recently said that Johnson “took a chance on LSU” before the current staff proved that they were capable of winning. She is very impressed by how Johnson has carved out a parallel career for herself while being committed to basketball.
“That’s why you get emotional about a Flau’Jae,” she said. “And just her spirit, her soul, her joyous personality.”
There’s no denying that they’ll miss each other’s company when Johnson goes to the WNBA this year.
