South Carolina Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley has penned a message on her social media account regarding the death of a renowned politician. On Tuesday, Feb. 17, several media outlets reported that American civil rights activist and former Shadow US Senator from DC, Jesse Jackson, has died at the age of 84.
Jackson rose to prominence when he became one of the proteges of the historical figure, Martin Luther King Jr., as they both significantly impacted civil rights and social movements during their time in the United States. With this, Staley took to her X/Twitter account to pay her respects with a heartfelt message.
“May Reverend Jesse Jackson’s soul rest in peace and love! Peace and love to his loved ones and the people he served. ❤️,” Staley wrote with a red heart emoji.
Staley is coming off perhaps her and her team’s biggest win of the year. On Saturday, Feb. 14, the Gamecocks defeated coach Kim Mulkey’s LSU Tigers by seven points, 79-72, in front of a hostile away crowd at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Looking to win their third national title in the last five years, South Carolina currently has an overall record of 25-2 (11-1 SEC).
Dawn Staley Weighed In On Where She Thinks Her Team Is In The 2025-26 Season
As mentioned earlier, coach Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks just had a huge moral victory against their arch rivals, the LSU Tigers.
At the post-game press conference, Staley was asked how the win translates to where her roster is at this point in the campaign. Staley said her squad is solely focused on the end goal, an NCAA title. She added that the LSU win was a huge boost.
“I think this team sees the end of the tunnel, meaning they know we’re at the end of the season. So it’s a little bit easier to just focus in on what we have in front of us. And this was a big one. This was a huge game in front of us, huge game on the road, and just a hostile environment, very, very NCAA Tournament-like, and we just found a way to win. I think this team is finding ways to win, a lot of different ways. Especially when we’re not fully healthy,” Staley was quoted as saying.
