Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks will play the LSU Tigers today in Baton Rouge. So far, Staley’s team has had a better season than the Tigers. They have won 24 of the 26 games they’ve played this season.
South Carolina leads the conference with a comfortable margin against the Tigers. The host team is currently in the fifth position with a 22-3 overall record and 11 wins in 12 games at home.
This is going to be another interesting battle between two strong teams, and they have prepared their strategies for the game. While speaking with WACH Fox, Staley talked about the most important aspect of this matchup that’ll likely dictate the outcome.
Staley said that controlling the game in transition is going to be the key because that’s where most opportunities will show up. But this wouldn’t just be their strategy, as the other team would also try to exploit a similar situation.
“If you’re able to control the amount of easy opportunities that they get in transition, you can make it a game. If they control the amount of easy opportunities we get in transition and be able to play their game, it’s gonna be a long night for us,” Staley said.
The Gamecocks’ head coach stated that the outcome of the game will be decided on which team controls the game during those recurring windows. Staley isn’t going to make the mistake of undermining the opponent.
In her opinion, both teams have strong rosters with very capable players, and they’ll take advantage of every mistake that will be made on the court.
Dawn Staley on Facing MiLaysia Fulwiley
Staley has been South Carolina’s head coach since 2008. She has seen plenty of good players leave SC for another program during their collegiate stints. In April last year, guard MiLaysia Fulwiley transferred to the LSU Tigers.
Staley and Co. will face one of her former players tonight. When asked about Fulwiley, Staley spoke like she was still her player.
“I mean, she’s pretty similar to what she’s been doing. She’s great in transition. Can hit the three, can get to the basket. I do think she’s putting a little bit more heat on the ball handler. Just looking like a junior when things start to come together for them,” Staley said.
South Carolina is currently on a five-game winning streak, and they’d like to extend this unbeaten run. LSU, on the other hand, recently recovered after losing to the Texas Longhorns.
