It’s time to reflect back on a special memory of Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Dominiq Ponder, who died at the age of 23. The quarterback was involved in a fatal car accident on Sunday morning.

What Happened to Dominq Ponder? Everything We Know About the Fatal Accident

On Sunday morning, Dominiq Ponder, who had transferred to Colorado from Bethune-Cookman, was driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3 westbound on Baseline Road. He lost control of the vehicle and crashed through a guardrail into an electric line pole.

As per local authorities, the vehicle rolled down an embankment and caught on fire. Ponder was reportedly found dead at the site. According to a preliminary investigation into the accident, the Vehicular Crimes Unit of the Colorado State Patrol suspects “speed” as a factor behind the accident, as they believe no other vehicle was involved in the accident.

After learning about his loss, Colorado Athletics Director Fernando Lovo described him as a beloved teammate.

“The entire CU Athletics family is devastated at the tragic passing of Dominiq Ponder,” Lovo said. “He epitomized the values of passion, enthusiasm, leadership, toughness, and intelligence that were revered by his teammates and coaches alike. Our hearts go out to his family and all of his teammates during this difficult time.”

The Big 12 also shared its condolences to Ponder’s family:

“The Big 12 Conference is deeply saddened by the passing of Colorado football student-athlete Dominiq Ponder. We extend our condolences to the Ponder family and Dominiq’s loved ones. Our thoughts are with the entire CU community during this difficult time.”

After transferring to Colorado in 2024, he didn’t get any time. But in 2025, he got some time in the middle.
