“So Many Of You Are Missing The Point”: Nick Saban’s Daughter Kristen Defends Former Alabama HC’s Statement On NIL Amid Backlash

In a recent Senate testimony pertaining to the current Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) landscape of college football, former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban expressed his disappointment with the current spending patterns of programs, calling it an “arms race.”

The seven-time CFB national championship winners’ testimony on the increasing roster prices has garnered plenty of backlash from fans and analysts alike, with Saban being called out for not being supportive of players making money.

Amidst the ongoing chatter surrounding the NIL situation in collegiate football, Nick Saban’s daughter Kristen has vehemently defended her father’s statements, explaining how people have misinterpreted his remarks and are “missing the point.”

In a recent Instagram story, Kristen Saban revealed how her father’s comments were about the sustainability of college athletics as a whole and not undermining the CFB players’ pay.

“On today’s NIL testimony, since SO many of you are missing the point: The issue is whether the current NIL system is sustainable for college athletics as a whole, NOT about how much coaches make,” Kristen wrote on her Instagram story.

“The concern isn’t that athletes are making money. Most people, including my dad, support athletes benefitting from their name, image and likeness,” she ADDED.

Kristen further supported her argument by expressing how football revenue supports other sports and athletes, indicating that the overextension of NIL in college football will come at the cost of the funding of other sports.

“Most people don’t realize that football revenue funds far more than football. It helps support women’s sports, Olympic Sports, golf, tennis, swimming, gymnastics, softball, baseball, track and field, and countless opportunities for student-athletes who will never make millions,” Kristen elaborated.

Saban’s comprehensive clarification further delved into how unrestricted NIL has become, with no guardrails in sight regulating the same. She then asked her followers if they were prepared for schools to eliminate women’s sports and see Olympic sports diminish from campuses.

    • Year 3: $10 million
    • Year 4 (after Saban retired): $17 million
