Volleyball Legend Charlie Brande Breaks Silence After Backlash Over UC Irvine-CSUN Jordan Lucas Commentary

Volleyball legend Charlie Brande has issued a heartfelt apology for his remarks during the UC Irvine vs. CSUN broadcast that sparked controversy. Brande suggested that CSUN outside hitter Jordan Lucas should be “punched in the mouth” to stop him from talking during the match.

Redshirt junior Lucas went all out during the game, finishing with 8 kills and 7 digs, although Irvine ended up taking a 3-0 win.

However, it was his on-court behavior and chatter that irked Brande, who urged someone to put a stop to it. After the comments sparked backlash, Brande apologized to Jordan and vowed not to repeat it.

“I’d like to publicly apologize for my comment on the UC IRVINE VS CSUN Broadcast, Thursday, April 9. Most importantly, I apologize to Jordan, I whole-heartedly regret my comment towards him. I take full accountability for my comment and the damage it may have caused. Violence should never be acceptable or tolerated,” he said.

While Jordan hasn’t responded to the comments, fans had mixed reactions, with some calling it a one-time escape route and others urging him to exercise vocal discipline.

Charlie Brande Reflects on the Art of Broadcasting

Charlie Brande is one of the most legendary figures in volleyball history and has worn many hats through his career, broadcasting being the most recent. During an interview with Sandcast Media, Brande spoke about what it takes to engage the audience during a game and highlighted how he relies heavily on feedback to do justice to a sport that has given him so much.

“I tell people, ‘Critique me, tell me what I need to do better, so I get comments telling me how I do good with telling histories and I’ve seen it all, and bringing in the strategic things and others makes me think “Which audience am i talking to?” so that’s a lot of stuff,” he said (49:27).

He also reflected on how important it is to personalize the segment being covered so that everyone watching or listening feels connected.
