Nebraska Volleyball Assistant Coach Jaylen Reyes recently recalled when WNBA star Cameron Brink was almost recruited to the Huskers volleyball team. Reyes reflected on his father’s advice, who was a volleyball coach.
Reyes mentioned that while Brink wasn’t a highly skilled volleyball player because she hadn’t played enough club volleyball, the WNBA defensive star was among the top 1% athletes in the country with extraordinary physical ability. Reyes added that while Brink was an average blocker, she was exceptional at hitting a slide attack (an important skill for a middle blocker), a skill similar to a right-handed basketball layup.
After spotting her impressive athleticism, Amy Williams, the Nebraska women’s basketball team head coach, expressed interest in recruiting Brink.
“I remember him telling me, ‘Jaylen, we have this girl named Cameron that’s really, really athletically talented,’ but long story short, it was like, she was a really talented volleyball player, but she never played club volleyball because she obviously was probably dominating and played, I believe at that time she was playing AAU basketball in the Bay Area,” Reyes said.
“The one thing that my dad told me about her was ‘Jaylen, she not a great volleyball player but she’s like a one-percentile athlete around the country,’ the one thing he said, ‘She’s an okay blocker, but the one thing she could do really well is they would set her a high ball on the right and she would go up and hit a slide,’ but hitting a slide is very similar to a right handed layup in basketball. Amy at that time was like ‘Yeah, we’ll definitely recruit her,'” Reyes added.
Cameron Brink’s inclination towards basketball was natural, citing her family’s close ties with Stephen Curry. Her parents shared a good bond with the NBA legend as they worked for Nike.
