Gabby DiVita’s indoor debut with the Huskers has taken the volleyball community by storm, including Nebraska’s ex-coach John Cook, who praised the young athlete’s on-court persona. This comes as the Huskers swiped the floor against Iowa this past weekend in their spring face-off.
The Huskers kicked off their season with a clean four-sweep victory against Iowa State in the presence of a sold-out Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. As the seniors balanced the attacks, volleyball prodigy DiVita entered the match in the third set and by the end had 3 kills on 5 swings. She also delivered an impressive ace, which made her indoor debut all the more memorable.
Volleyball titan Cook took on the role of a broadcaster for the match and raved enormously about DiVita’s gameplay, saying:
“This is a great swing, but she’s gonna blast high off the hands, and it’s just great volleyball right there, and not much that Iowa State can do about it. Just looking at her, she does not look like a freshman; that’s a veteran play.”
John Cook was recently honored with the International Volleyball Hall of Fame (IVHF) Mayoral Award of Excellence for his impact on the sport. He previously led the Huskers to four NCAA victories.
Gabby DiVita Talks about Being Ecstatic to Play for Nebraska
Gabby DiVita stood out as the shining star of the past week’s bout against Iowa State due to her ability to be a six-rotation player. Analysts praised her ability to quickly integrate into the fast-paced system of the Huskers, and the same was echoed by DiVita during the post-match conference.
“This has been a dream of mine for a very long time, so just getting to play with the group we had so much fun. Everybody’s good here so we just feed off each other, and I think that’s really a big thing so,” she said (1:14).
The Huskers would next be seen taking on the Creighton Bluejays on April 17 at the D.J. Sokol Arena.
