Alysa Liu’s best friend recently shared the behind-the-scenes of the skater’s return following an impressive Olympic campaign. She created history by becoming the first American in 24 years to nab an Olympic gold medal in the women’s figure skating event.
Liu wrapped up her time at the 2026 Winter Olympics with two gold medals. She won her first one in the team event, where she performed in the short program, ending up in second place and making a significant contribution to her team’s gold medal win. Days after this, she competed in the women’s free skate final on February 19, where she skated to Donna Summer’s ‘MacArthur Park Suite,’ delivering a stunning execution of all seven of her triple jumps, including three in combination.
With this commanding performance on the ice, she registered an overall score of 224.90, clinching her first-ever individual gold medal. Following the successful Olympic campaign, an unseen clip of her returning home and being welcomed by her friends was shared by her best friend.
The latter posted a video of picking Liu up from the airport and highlighted the skater’s luggage on Instagram. The video also featured fun moments of them at the airport and in the car. The video’s humorous caption read:
“Rare aesthetic: ur friend wins the Olympics and brings the entire mf village back home w her.”
After her team and individual free skate performance in Milan, Alysa Liu also competed in the exhibition gala on February 21. Here she skated to ‘Stateside’ by PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson.
Alysa Liu reflected on winning a gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics
Alysa Liu shared her experience of competing on the biggest stage in the world in her post-skate conversation with the media during the Milan Cortina Olympics. Opening up about how it has been a dream for her to perform in her own way on the big stage, she called herself lucky. Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, she said:
“Being able to do it my way on the big stage like this has been my dream, and I got to do it in my short, I got to do it in the team event, and I got to do it tonight for the free skate, and I’m going to do it again for the Olympic Gala, so I don’t know, I’m just like over the moon. I’m the luckiest girl ever, and yeah, I’m really grateful,”
Liu further spoke about the details of her performance, highlighting how she expresses her story through her skate.
“I guess the thing is I love what I like to share about myself is like my story and my art, my creative process, and I guess messing up doesn’t take away from that. It’s still something. It’s still a story, you know, a bad story is still a story, and I think that’s beautiful, so there’s no way to lose,” she added.
Alysa Liu’s exhibition gala performance charmed the singer, Zara Larsson, whose song she skated to. The latter posted a video of her reacting to the skater’s performance and ended it by applauding the American.
