Suni Lee Eyes The Alysa Liu Route For A Potential LA 2028 Olympic Comeback

Suni Lee recently opened up about making a comeback to gymnastics for the Olympics in a fashion similar to 2026 Winter Olympics champion Alysa Liu. Lee’s last competitive appearance came during the 2024 Paris Games, since which she has been busy building her personal brand and profile.

During a recent interview with the Today Show, Lee highlighted that in her last Olympic appearance, she felt a lot of pressure as the defending champion. The American gymnast added that, as the LA 2028 could be her last Olympics, she wants to enjoy it and will make the final decision about her participation only a few weeks before the competition, after keeping a tab on her mental health. Lee specified that her next Olympic appearance will be on her own terms, much like Alysa Liu this year in Italy.

American figure skater Liu made her first appearance at the 2022 Beijing Games, where she finished in seventh place in singles competition. While it marked the start of her legacy, she announced her retirement at only 16 to lead a normal life. Two years later, after a skiing trip, she realized she missed the rush she felt while competing and returned to the sport. Lee said that she also aims to return to sport.

“I think it’s just a matter of where my mental health is, and also, like, this Olympics, if I come back, I think it would really have to just be for me. I don’t want to do it for anybody else and like, have that pressure on me. I think last Olympics, I put so much pressure on myself, because I was the reigning Olympic champion, and now I’m like, I just want to enjoy it, like it would be my potential last one if I did do it. So I just kind of want to see where I’m at, how my body feels, and I’ll probably give myself, like, I don’t know, a couple, a couple more months to decide, but we’ll see,” Lee said.

Liu won gold medals in the team and singles events at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

In an interview with Olympics.com, she expressed her pride and belief that she deserves to be happy. Lee also expressed her gratitude for the opportunities that gymnastics has given her.

“I think I am finally understanding how good of a gymnast I am and that all of the hard work that I did definitely does pay off, that I do deserve to be happy,” Lee said. “All of the opportunities I’ve been able to get have been so amazing… and it’s really crazy that me doing gymnastics could put me in the same room as some of these people. It’s such a crazy feeling to explain.”

Suni Lee has so far won six Olympic medals, including two gold, one silver, and three bronze medals.
