It’s been over a year since Nico Iamaleava left the Tennessee Volunteers to join the UCLA Bruins. The Tennessee fans, however, aren’t over Iamaleava’s inconsistency, internal disputes, and eventual departure in 2025.
Fans brought up the former Vols quarterback when it was announced that Chaz Coleman, the 19-year-old defensive end who joined the program in January, has returned to Knoxville.
In the case of Iamaleava, he was in active contract negotiations with Tennessee as he wanted to rework his NIL deal. He also missed the team’s practice before a spring game, which led to Josh Heupel announcing that the Vols will move on from him.
Coleman, on the other hand, has been dealing with some personal issues. Although the details aren’t revealed to the public, the program is supporting him during this time. The fans, however, aren’t convinced yet.
“BREAKING: Tennessee defensive end Chaz Coleman has returned to Knoxville, per Austin Price at VolQuest 🍊Coleman’s future with the program remains unclear, given he was expected back earlier in the week for the beginning of team workouts. Does Chaz Coleman play for the Vols this season?” a Vols fan page posted on X.
“Too little, too late. No interest in another Nico or Boo. Get the money back, send him on his way,” a fan responded.
“I wonder if the University threatened to sue him,” a fan wrote.
“I honestly hope not, it would be a net negative for the team. Cut bait and move on with guys that want to be here,” a fan wrote.
“It would be ideal if he could play but only if he isn’t a further distraction,” a fan wrote.
“Damage done we don’t need primadonna’s that don’t want to be here that think they are bigger that the program. Sure there are plenty of guys that have been putting in the work at deserve that position more than him. Guy looks scrawny like he hasn’t picked up a weight in months,” a fan wrote.
“He’s gonna continue to be a distraction,” a fan wrote.
The fans have their reasons to question players and their commitment to the program. But judging Coleman without giving him a chance is also unfair.
Josh Huepel on Chaz Coleman’s Absence
The fans don’t know everything that goes on inside an organization. So, they form their opinions based on the information that’s available to them and patterns they’ve recognized. The team, however, works differently.
“Chaz has been dealing with some things, and we’re here to support him,” he said. “We’ll continue to go through that process.”
While some fans are strongly against Coleman, head coach Josh Huepel has made it clear that the program is supporting him at this time.
