Who Is Christian McCaffrey’s Brother? Chargers RB Coach Hire Puts Former 49ers WR Max McCaffrey in Spotlight

Former NFL wide receiver Max McCaffrey, the brother of San Francisco 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey, has landed a new NFL coaching job.

After playing in the NFL from 2016-2018 (mainly as a practice squad player), McCaffrey has joined the Los Angeles Chargers’ coaching staff as their running backs coach for the 2026-2027 season. He previously served as an offensive assistant for the Miami Dolphins from 2023-2025.

McCaffrey played for the Duke Blue Devils’ football team from 2012-2015. He was an undrafted free agent in 2016 where he spent time with the Oakland Raiders and Green Bay Packers’ practice squads. He spent the 2017 season on the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad before being signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2017, and recording his only NFL catch which was a four-yard reception.

McCaffrey then rejoined the Packers’ practice squad before joining the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad for some of the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
