The Kansas City Chiefs have restructured Patrick Mahomes’ contract once again. The Chiefs have restructured Mahomes’ contract for the last four years consecutively in order to improve their salary cap situation.
The recent restructuring brings Mahomes’ salary cap number down to $34.65 million from $78.2 million. The Chiefs have freed up $43.56 million in salary cap space in one move.
This decision is making waves on social media already because fans believe it’s an early sign of something major about to happen. The reactions to the lowered cap space indicate that the Chiefs are going to make some interesting additions to the team.
“Dear god, they’re 100% going crazy this free agency,” a fan wrote.
“Chiefs restructuring Mahomes’ deal creates major cap space. Smart move to build around him instead of paying all the money upfront. That’s how you stay competitive in the salary cap era,” a fan wrote.
“How is this legal,” a fan wrote.
“What’s the reason behind that ?” a fan asked.
“They didn’t lower anything for Pat. He gets his money quicker as a bonus. Team spreads it over the length of the contract. Win win today. Cap number down the road will continue to balloon and they’ll continue to restructure. When he leaves, the Chiefs will have a problem,” another fan explained.
“Clearing $43M in space with one move… league better watch who they sign next,” a fan wrote.
The Chiefs witnessed their dynasty crumble last season. After dominating the league for nearly a decade, they failed to make it to the playoffs in 2026. To make matters worse, their star quarterback suffered a torn ACL and LCL, which ended his season.
They’re also going to potentially lose a few players either to trades or retirement. But the Chiefs aren’t going down without a fight. The recent restructuring of Mahomes’ contract shows that they’re trying to bounce back and reestablish themselves next season.
What Patrick Mahomes’ Contract Restructure Means for Chiefs
There’s a lot that the Chiefs can do from here. The ideal scenario in the interest of their redemption season would be to sign some new players. Many believe that the next big signing would be wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
Hill recently became an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career. He spent the last four years in the league with the Miami Dolphins, and their disastrous run had become a problem for him.
He started his NFL career with the Chiefs in 2016 and was part of the Super Bowl-winning team in 2019. Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones, who was in Hill’s draft class, recently hinted at a possible reunion.
“@cheetah it’s ⏰,” he wrote on X.
It’ll be interesting to see what direction the Chiefs choose to go from here.
