One of the best running back duos in the last few seasons in the NFL has been the duo of Detroit Lions running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs.
After news surfaced that the Lions agreed to trade Montgomery to the Houston Texans, it split up ‘Sonic and Knuckles’ after three seasons together in Detroit.
The Texans sent the Lions a 2026 fourth and seventh-round pick as well as offensive lineman Juice Scruggs.
Montgomery joins a backfield that consists of Woody Marks and an injured Joe Mixon.
As for Detroit, it opens up a potentially huge fantasy season for Gibbs this fall. He’s rushed for 1,200+ yards and has caught 500+ receiving yards while scoring 18+ touchdowns in each of the last two seasons.
Without Montgomery, Gibbs is expected to be a bell-cow in Detroit and will likely get more of a workload, leading to more opportunities for him to continue putting up big numbers.
Lions RB Depth Chart
Outside of Jahmyr Gibbs, the Detroit Lions backfield is young, unproven, and inexperienced. No other current Lions running back has reached 100 career rushing yards.
With how inexperienced the Lions’ backfield is and losing a guy like Montgomery and his productivity, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Lions add a running back in free agency or the NFL Draft.

Jahmyr Gibbs
A lot if going to fall on the hands of Jahmyr Gibbs this season. He’s a three-time Pro Bowler that has rushed for 3,580 yards, 39 touchdowns, and has caught 181 receptions for 1,449 yards, and 10 touchdowns.
Jacob Saylers
Jacob Saylers is a second-year back who was in his rookie season last year that had two carries for 11 yards last season.
Sione Vaki
Sione Vaki is a 2024 fourth-round pick that had one carry last season for four yards.
Jabari Small
rJabari Small is another rookie from last season. He didn’t record any stats last season.
