The NFL 2026 season received one of its first big trades as the Detroit Lions have reportedly let their standout RB David Montgomery join the Houston Texans via a trade.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport, upon breaking this news, also highlighted how this trade marks the end of the special duo of RBs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, most commonly known as “Sonic and Knuckles,” a reference to the famous cartoon duo representing speed and strength.

Fans on X did not waste any time in reacting to this update, with some sad about his departure from the Lions, while some analyzed how the trade will affect both sides involved.

“no more Sonic & Knuckles😢”, stated a fan.

“The best duo running back system in the NFL no longer exists”, said a fan.

“Lions losing Knuckles hurts. He wasn’t just a back — he was culture”, commented a fan.

“Knuckles and Sonic breaking up?”, wrote a fan.

Sonic and Knuckles got zero gold rings together😞“, stated another fan.

“Huge Texans W. Wow”, said another fan.

“Montgomery traded, picks in return… Lions looking to the future while saying goodbye to an era”, commented another fan.

“Good move for the Texans should help them finally be able to resemble some sort of run game”, wrote another fan.

Montgomery’s trade to the Texas-based franchise will see the Lions receive a fourth-round and a seventh-round pick in the form of compensation.

The veteran running back’s trade to the Houston Texans will have major implications on their depth chart come next season. ESPN has already put Montgomery as the Houston-based side’s starting running back, while the likes of Woody Marks, Joe Mixon, and Nick Chubb occupy the second, third, and fourth spots on the depth chart, respectively.

While a lot may change once the season starts, the fact that Houston is willing to give up on two of their draft picks to acquire Montgomery’s services goes to show the trust it has in the veteran running back.
