There’s a new quarterback in Minnesota joining JJ McCarthy, as the Minnesota Vikings have signed former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray.
Murray signed a one-year contract with Minnesota on March 12 with a chance to compete for the team’s starting quarterback job this fall. He will battle with Vikings’ 2024 first-round pick JJ McCarthy, who had had a slow start to his NFL career.
As of now, nobody knows who will start at quarterback in Week 1 for Minnesota. But some people think it’s McCarthy’s job to lose, including Dave Portnoy’s co-host, PFT Commentator, who is the co-host of the Pardon My Take podcast.
Examining Who The Vikings Should Start At Quarterback in 2026
The Minnesota Vikings find themselves in an interesting quarterback battle with Kyler Murray and JJ McCarthy. One would think, if they are both fully healthy by the start of the season that Murray would begin as starter, but again, who knows.
The Vikings ownership has shown that they aren’t committed to McCarthy, despite using a first-round and top-10 pick on him two years ago. He’s struggled in his first two season and a large reason for that is injuries.
As a rookie, McCarthy suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee sidelining him for his entire rookie season.
McCarthy became Minnesota’s starting quarterback after Sam Darnold left in free agency last offseason. McCarthy suffered an early high ankle sprain, causing him to miss five games. As a starter, he went 6-4 while throwing for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, 12 interceptions. He rushed for 181 yards and four touchdowns.
Murray is a veteran that’s never been a very talented Arizona Cardinals team, and at times, flashed and showed why he was a former first-overall pick. He’s brought Arizona to the playoffs just once in his career.
Murray is a two-time Pro Bowler that’s thrown for over 20,000 passing yards, 121 touchdowns, and has rushed for over 3,000 yards and 32 touchdowns.
It should be a battle in Minnesota and it could be either Murray or McCarthy that starts in Week 1.
