The NFL MVP voting that crowned Matthew Stafford over fan favorite Drake Maye had an interesting vote that might have played the role of kingmaker. Stafford finished with 366 total points, just ahead of Maye’s 361.
The Los Angeles Rams quarterback received 24 of 50 first-place votes. Meanwhile, Maye received 23 first-place votes. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen received two first-place votes, but it was that last first-place vote that is driving controversy. That sole vote went to Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, who finished well behind all these guys in the voting. Had the other first-place votes gone Maye’s way, the New England Patriots quarterback could have won the MVP race over Stafford.
Interestingly, the man who shockingly voted for Herbert has come forward. He is Sam Monson of The 33rd Team, and he shared his reason why he voted for the Chargers quarterback.
“I was the Justin Herbert vote,” Monson wrote. “The guy had the worst offensive line in the NFL all season and despite that he was working miracles in almost every single game. Stafford’s OL became 2/5ths as bad as Herbert’s for 5 minutes and he became a turnover howitzer. He embodied ‘value.'”
Fans Slam Sam Monson For Potentially Costing Drake Maye MVP
Fans were already furious after they learned that one person had voted for Justin Herbert, who was far behind in the contention of NFL MVP. And when Sam Monson came forward with his reason for why he did so, the fans became even more furious.
They made their feelings known in the comments under his post.
“I respect going public, but shit like this is why fans have no trust in the awards voting process,” one fan wrote. “MVP is not “guy that did better than he should’ve given the circumstances.” It’s best player of the season. By this logic Mahomes should’ve been MVP as he had a corpse of a team.”
“sam with all due respect i just cannot fathom how you can rightly make the supporting cast argument against stafford but not do the same in favor of maye when he had significantly worse weapons than both herbert and stafford,” another fan added.
“I’m a big fan of your work, Sam, and I know you operate in good faith,” one fan added. “This was a miss. Maye was the top producing QB this year by most metrics and led the top offense in football with a supporting cast that was seen as a bottom 10 group before the season.”
“I respect you for coming publicly with your vote,” one fan added. “But this might be the worst take of all time.”
“I don’t think you did your research. Have you even watched a Patriots game this season? Drake Maye had a brutal OL. Drake Maye got sacked 28 times and Herbert 22. Maye also had less offensive talent around him and…now this one is obvious…he had way better numbers all around,” another fan slammed Monson.
“Why does this random have a vote,” one fan said.
Despite the damning fan reactions, Sam Monson has taken a firm stand behind his votes and has also replied to some fans on why he believes Herbert deserved that vote.
