Brendan Sorsby is widely expected to enter the 2026 supplemental draft after he parted ways with the Texas Tech Red Raiders on June 15.
Sorsby has admitted to struggling with a gambling problem, which led to him being banned from playing in the 2026 college football season by the NCAA. Despite the Red Raiders’ star receiving a court injunction against the association, the player decided not to go ahead with it.
Now that NFL teams could be eyeing Sorsby in the supplemental draft, many analysts question whether his gambling problem would be a point of hesitation for franchises.
Analyst Ari Meirov spoke about the situation on Thursday and said that if Sorsby convinces teams he is a franchise quarterback, the gambling issue wouldn’t be a big hurdle.
“If an NFL team is convinced Brendan Sorsby can be its franchise quarterback, you’re kidding yourself if you think a past gambling issue will take him off the board. NFL teams will do almost anything to find ‘the guy,'” Meirov said.
Sorsby admitted to placing thousands of bets on college and pro sports. He was diagnosed with gambling and anxiety disorders and entered a rehabilitation center.
Louis Riddick Weighs In on NFL Team’s Potential Thoughts on Brendan Sorsby
Louis Riddick spoke about an NFL team’s potential mindset when drafting Brendan Sorsby during an episode of ESPN’s “Get Up” on Wednesday.
Riddick shared that while some teams let a lot of things slide when a player is an important one, he highlighted that they would have to be sure about their decision to bring in Sorsby.
“Every single GM, team president, owner is always trying to strike that delicate balance between tolerance relative to talent level,” he said. “The greater the player, the more you are willing to let kind of things slide, and kind of try (to) pass things through, and justify in your own mind that the risk is worth the reward.”
Sorsby reportedly placed bets totaling over $90,000, including on his own team while he was with the Indiana Hoosiers.
