The Minnesota Vikings are looking at an exciting quarterback battle as Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy fight for the starting job for the 2026 NFL season.
Upon Murray joining the Vikings, many analysts said they believed the starting quarterback role would go to the former Arizona Cardinals star.
However, according to Jeremy Fowler, McCarthy has bridged the gap between him and Murray and has worked on the issues O’Connell and staff wanted him to address.
“But the way the Vikings see it is, hey, we weren’t in pads. There wasn’t a lot of hitting or contact. Let’s get to camp, see how this goes, and whether he lets that competition go into the preseason games will be based on feel. Most people around the league I’ve spoken to do believe that at the end of the day, Kyler Murray will win this job. Keep in mind with JJ McCarthy, though, the Vikings asked him to fix some things, including his ability to layer the ball, throw at different speeds. I’m told he’s addressed that in a major way, and it has shown.” Fowler said.
Kevin O’Connell Clears the Air on J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray’s Relationship
The relationship between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy became a topic of conversation when the two quarterbacks gave very different answers on their bond.
While McCarthy said they’re like two guys in high school, sitting on separate sides of the classroom, Murray said he’s willing to help the former Michigan star with all the experience he has.
These statements led many fans and analysts to predict that there is some awkwardness between the two quarterbacks.
During a press conference on June 4th, O’Connell said the comments were misinterpreted as intended.
“I would just say, in the room, day to day, the dialogue between those guys, the interactions, have been very professional,” O’Connell said. “And more than that, it’s been a positive room. So I didn’t make much of it. I know there was some reaction to it. That’s probably not the first time there’s gonna be a reaction to those guys answering questions about the situation. That’s what the competition is all about. There’s no hiding anything.”
McCarthy’s journey in the NFL has been full of ups and downs, as he has struggled with injuries since his rookie season.
