Crissy Froyd was fired from her job as a freelance writer with USA Today after she shared her thoughts on the Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini scandal.
The New England Patriots coach and the NFL insider were spotted at a resort together in Sedona, Arizona, and were even captured hugging, holding hands, and spending time by the pool. The pictures were released by Page Six in April.
Froyd quickly faced the consequences of expressing her thoughts about the situation, as not only did she lose her job, but she was also subjected to extensive online trolling.
During a conversation with reporter Mike Asti on Friday, Froyd spoke about how the whole controversy affected her.
“It caught me off guard because I never expected this to happen,” Froyd said. “I mean, at the time I tweeted that, actually, I was pretty much just using Twitter to post articles on, and then really wasn’t actually even on it that much. And then I waited a long time to do that because whenever the Page Six photos first came out, I really wanted to just go ahead and say something then. And I was like, well, I don’t know if I’m going to wait for something else to happen. And so whenever she submitted her resignation, I thought that everyone since all these people knew and all these people told me from the time that I first hit the ground in the NFL, I was like, Okay.”
Russini resigned from her position with The Athletic soon after the pictures were leaked amid an internal investigation by the publication. Meanwhile, Vrabel has continued to face media scrutiny over the alleged relationship.
Crissy Froyd Speaks on NFL World’s Silence on the Dianna Russini, Mike Vrabel Situation
Crissy Froyd spoke to radio personality Howard Eskin on his podcast a couple of weeks ago and shared her thoughts on what she thinks was the worst part of the controversy.
Froyd said that everyone in the league knew what was going on between Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini, yet no one did anything about it.
The fired USA Today writer added that she would almost feel bad about Russini’s situation if it were like a six-month thing, but to keep making the same mistake for six years is a totally different ballgame.
“The thing was the way that she had deleted her Twitter account, and it appeared, at least the way I took it and the way that most people took it, that she had been like covertly bragging on that. I mean, it’s disgusting,” Froyd said [12:00].
Pictures of Russini and Vrabel getting close in a bar in 2020 also went viral a few days after the Arizona pictures.
