Will Josh Jacobs Be Released by the Packers? Breaking Down the Possibility

The Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs was released from jail on Wednesday after his arrest on several domestic violence charges. The 28-year-old joined the Packers in 2024 after five years with the Raiders.

The investigation is still going on in the matter against Jacobs. New details have emerged over the last few days, including dispatch audio.

According to police records, authorities responded to a Saturday morning disturbance call where a neighbor reported an assault, with dispatchers noting yelling and thrown objects over an open line. Amid everything that’s going on, what will happen to Jacobs’ future with the Packers?

The looming question of whether the Packers will ultimately release Jacobs hinges on the outcome of the DA’s investigation and the financial nuances of his contract. Entering his third year with the organization after a decent 2025 campaign, rushing for 929 yards and 13 touchdowns, Jacobs carries a heavy salary-cap charge for 2026.

Modern NFL contracts typically contain conduct clauses that void guaranteed money in the event of an arrest or suspension. For now, the Packers aren’t rushing to make a decision, especially when the investigation is ongoing.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if they decide to sever ties with the running back once the investigation concludes.

“Jacobs, 28, was booked Tuesday by the Hobart-Lawrence (Wisconsin) Police Department on charges of battery (domestic abuse, criminal damage to property), domestic abuse, disorderly conduct (domestic abuse, strangulation and suffocation), and intimidation of a victim,” ESPN reported.

These charges are serious, and they will carry grave consequences for Jacobs. It all depends on where the investigation leads us from here.

DA’s Office on Josh Jacobs’ Ongoing Investigation

The Brown County (Wisconsin) District Attorney’s office announced that the investigation in Jacobs’ matter “remains open and ongoing.”

District Attorney David L. Lasee released a statement detailing the process.

“After reviewing the available evidence in this case, the Brown County District Attorney’s Office is not yet prepared to make a formal charging decision,” Lasee said. “Our office has requested additional investigation, as there is reason to believe that additional evidence may exist that would impact whether criminal charges are appropriate, and what charges would be issued.”

“Mr. Jacobs will be released from custody at this time, and a final charging decision will be made by our office at a later date.”

Jacobs’ attorneys also released a statement on Wednesday, asking people to “keep an open mind while the matter is fully reviewed.” The attorneys outlined that no criminal charges have been filed against him.
