Javon Hargrave signed a two-year, $30 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings in March 2025. He started his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2016 after being drafted by them as their third-round pick.
In 2020, he went to the Philadelphia Eagles and was sent to the San Francisco 49ers in 2023. Despite not finding stability with one franchise in a while, Hargrave has managed to secure offers from teams over the years.
After another short stint, this time with the Minnesota Vikings, he is set to be released. ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently reported, “Vikings are releasing DT Javon Hargrave today.” Hargrave still has one year left on his contract.
This move will free up nearly $11 million in cap space for the Minnesota Vikings. However, nearly the same amount will remain on the cap as dead money. With Hargrave moving on from Minnesota, there are several teams in the race to sign him.
The 33-year-old will generate a lot of buzz, and he’ll have plenty of options to choose from. Let’s take a look at the five teams most likely to sign the veteran defensive end.
Javon Hargrave’s Landing Spots
Pittsburgh Steelers
Any time a veteran player gets released, the chances of them reuniting with their former team grow exponentially. Hargrave started his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, which gives them the edge over many other teams.
Even though he didn’t have a great run the first time, the Steelers are currently looking to upgrade their defensive line, and Hargrave can be a great addition to the roster.
New York Jets
The Jets might be the most ideal fit for Hargrave this year. They’re looking for versatility and depth for their roster. Hargrave comes with a decade of experience, and even though he has had injury troubles, Hargrave’s productivity can’t be denied.
Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears are likely going to lose a good amount of talent from their roster this offseason. It’s nearly guaranteed that they’ll be very active during free agency as they’ll have to not only fill those spaces but also choose players who can help elevate the team.
Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers had a good run last season. They made the playoffs and were looking to make a deep postseason run. However, the high stakes and intense playoff matchups exposed their biggest problems.
One of the areas that they need to work on ahead of the next season is the defensive line. They’re already making moves in the offseason, and if the Packers end up signing Hargrave, it wouldn’t be surprising.
Detroit Lions
The last few seasons have been underwhelming for Detroit. They have the team, the coach, and have shown flashes of brilliance, but they haven’t been able to give their campaign the final push toward the end.
Levi Onwuzurike and Kyle Peko are possibly entering free agency soon, so the Lions will need someone like Hargrave in the lineup.
