Fernando Mendoza was always expected to be one of the standouts at this year’s NFL Draft, and when he went No. 1, few would have been surprised.
Mendoza dominated college football last season, leading the Indiana Hoosiers to a National Championship title and etching his name in college history as a result.
The Las Vegas Raiders know they have something special in the talented quarterback, and it appears his family knows it, too.
Mendoza’s grandparents’ heartwarming reaction to their grandchild’s success is now going viral, with the youngster himself taken by surprise and reacting warmly to the wishes.
“Fernando, I’m so proud of you not only for what you have achieved but for the kind of person you are,” his grandfather said.
“You’ve brought so much joy to our entire family and watching you grow has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. Your success did not come from luck, it came from hard work, discipline and never giving up. No matter where life takes you, I will always be proud. The world is better because you are in it. May God keep you healthy and happy. We love you.”
Fernando Mendoza Gets Emotional About Family
The new Raiders QB was understandably emotional about the address and spoke a bit about the upbringing his grandparents gave him.
“That’s great, I love them,” he said. “They raised me from a little boy, they instilled their Cuban culture, their Cuban love in me and its been so special to be having them as role models… I love you guys from the bottom of my heart no matter what happens. My love is eternal for you guys.”
The young QB will have plenty more well-wishers as he starts his brand new NFL journey.
