Diego Pavia, arguably the greatest player in Vanderbilt Commodores history, went undrafted. Pavia became the first Heisman finalist since 2004 to not hear his name called.
In his last season for the Commodores, Pavia had 3539 yards with 29 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He finished behind Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza in the Heisman race.
Former NFL safety Ryan Clark, who went undrafted in 2002, shared a message to all the players who went undrafted, including Pavia.
“You can’t see it right now, but your story is just beginning. I know your phone didn’t ring, no one called your name, & a dream has been delayed… but all you need is 1 opportunity,” Clark captioned his post.
Clark said he understands that not being drafted hurts, but this is just another setback for those who have put in the work and are built for greater challenges.
“When you’re built the right way, the way we are, you won’t allow not being okay to stop you. Don’t let this weekend define your worth, and please do not accept this is your value, but also, never forget that this is what they think of you,” Clark said.
Clark was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Giants in 2002. He won the Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2009 and made the Pro Bowl in 2011.
Diego Pavia is Still Unsigned
Players who are not selected in the draft often sign as undrafted free agents with a team and then compete for a roster spot.
Pavia is still waiting to be signed. There are several reasons why teams might have overlooked Pavia. He is 5-foot-9 and 7/8, and his arm strength doesn’t match up to some of the top quarterbacks at this year’s draft. Pavia also isn’t afraid to speak his mind, which could’ve hurt his chance of being drafted.
It’ll be interesting to see where he goes and what he has to say about not being drafted.
