Fans expressed shock and disappointment after seeing LA Rams wide receiver Tutu Atwell earn $1.7 million each for his six catches, taking the total amount to $10 million. Atwell caught just six receptions for 192 yards in 10 games. This includes an 88-yard, game-winning touchdown early in the season.
The limited production was the result of minimal opportunities to feature on offense, which primarily targeted Davante Adams and Puka Nacua. Moreover, Atwell was a healthy scratch in one game as well.
Fans shared their reaction on this on social media:
“That’s disgusting,” one fan wrote.
“tutu much money,” another fan added.
“How in the world was he being paid that much. The hell?” one fan asked.
“Sounds like he’d be a great candidate for the Bills” one fan sarcastically joked.
“Smart move? Or dumb? That is $52,083.30 per yard… 😅” one fan added.
“His agent must be a legend. Art of the Deal type contract right there,” one fan wrote.
“I was surprised the Rams gave him that money – not because Tutu sucks (far from it) – but because I didn’t think McVay really had a use for him. All Rams receivers need to block, and Tutu, though fearless with the heart of a warrior, was considered too small for the job. Also, Tutu wasn’t used on special teams, making him less valuable to the team. He needs to be in a different scheme – on a different team. He can still be a productive player,” one fan wrote.
Rams Benched Tutu Atwell For Divisional Round Playoffs Game vs Bears
The Rams made a controversial decision to bench Tutu Atwell for the divisional round playoff game against the Chicago Bears. The Rams won that game 20-17 in overtime to set up a date with the Seattle Seahawks in the conference championship battle.
Head coach Sean McVay shared the reason behind benching Tutu Atwell.
“Really just when you’re talking about the amount of receivers and those guys’ ability to contribute on [special] teams is the simplest approach,” McVay said.
McVay also answered whether Atwell will be left out of the lineup in the coming playoff games.
“I don’t know that,” McVay added. “We’ll have to figure out exactly what our 48 looks like. There is some flexibility and fluidity. That that was more of a [special] teams kind of thing. Once we really dive into the prep and figure out what these game plans are on each side of the football, that really will affect the decision making.”
It remains to be seen if Atwell can get back into the lineup and make his presence count.
