Drake Maye and Sam Darnold will lead their respective teams at Super Bowl LX next Sunday. The New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks have battled through numerous challenges throughout the season to earn their spot in the biggest showdown of the year.
The stage is set for the two quarterbacks in their 20s to make history on February 8. In a week, we will have a new Super Bowl-winning quarterback in the league, as both players are yet to achieve that milestone.
Darnold is slightly more experienced than Maye when it comes to postseason football. Having spent more years in the league, he has been to the playoffs thrice in his career. The difference isn’t as big as one would assume.
Darnold has played four games in the playoffs in his career, two with the Seahawks in the current season, one with the Minnesota Vikings, and his first with the San Francisco 49ers. It’s worth noting that he didn’t get any play time in his first playoff appearance.
In these four games, Darnold has a passer rating of 103.1. He has 715 yards with five touchdowns and one interception. Without a doubt, his current run with the Seahawks has been his best postseason performance.
Maye, on the other hand, made his first playoff appearance this year. So far, he has played three games and has performed really well for his team. He has 533 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions in 3 games. Maye also has a passer rating of 84 in the playoffs.
The two quarterbacks are very close as far as their postseason production is concerned. These numbers won’t hold much value, other than a mental advantage or disadvantage, when they step up for the Super Bowl matchup.
Drake Maye and Sam Darnold’s Injury Reports
Injuries are very common throughout the season. Players often miss games, at times for long stretches, and teams adjust accordingly. At this stage, however, an injury to the starting quarterbacks is the last thing that the Patriots or the Seahawks would want.
In last Wednesday’s injury report, Drake Maye was listed as a limited participant. But since the team didn’t have any practice, it was seen as a precautionary measure. Darnold, on the other hand, has a bigger problem.
As per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Sam Darnold hasn’t had a complete practice session with the team since January 15.
“They’ve just been really cautious to make sure he doesn’t let it rip in practice. You know, not be a full go. They want to make sure he’s not trying too much and saving it all for game day,” Fowler reported.
As of now, both quarterbacks are expected to be at the Super Bowl. Considering the importance of the game, even if they have minor discomforts, they’ll likely lace up for their respective teams.
