Former Super Bowl champion Aaron Donald could come out of retirement to help the Los Angeles Rams go all the way if rumors are to be believed.
However, even if Donald decides to return, former NFL head team doctor David J. Chao believes expectations will have to take a back seat. In his time, Donald was one of the most fearsome defenders on the defensive line for any opposition. However, expecting the same after he has been out for three years will be unfair. Adding to that thought, Dr. Chao thinks his place as the top dog has now been taken by fellow pass-rusher Myles Garrett.
“If Aaron Donald returns, don’t expect the same player you saw before. After all this time away, he won’t be the same over a 17-game season. He’ll still flash greatness, but Myles Garrett is the top dog in L.A. now,” Dr. Chao wrote on X.
The rumor mill started after ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Donald recently worked out at the Rams facility. Many believe that Donald wanted to see if he is fit enough for a potential return. Moreover, Donald and the Rams are reportedly both working on a potential reunion. The prospect of playing alongside another elite pass rusher, Garrett, could really excite Donald to come out of retirement.
Donald, who retired after the 2023 season following 10 years in the NFL, has collected three NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards, 10 Pro Bowl selections, eight First-Team All-Pro honors and a Super Bowl LVI championship.
Rams WR Joins Aaron Donald Comeback Squad
It’s not only the fans in LA who are excited about Aaron Donald’s potential return in the NFL. Wide receiver Davante Adams also fueled the buzz on social media.
The Rams receiver posted a story on social media with Donald and wrote:
“My Brudda.”
It clearly showed Adams’ excitement regarding Donald’s potential return.
Despite widespread speculation, one must note that Donald has frequently trained at the Rams’ facility since retiring. Therefore, the recent workout is not enough to suggest that Donald indeed is returning.
It all depends on whether his body, fitness and motivation allow him to play 17 games in the NFL, which Dr. Chao believes there’s “not a chance” of.
If Donald joins the Rams, their Super Bowl chances could reach a new ceiling as they already possess both the reigning MVP and Defensive Player of the Year on their roster in the form of quarterback Matthew Stafford and Myles Garrett, respectively.
