Deshaun Watson might be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns next season. He is considered to be the frontrunner for the role, and he also made a good impression on new head coach Todd Monken.
There are still a lot of things to be sorted out before Watson can take that spot. Until then, the 30-year-old is enjoying his free time in the offseason.
His wife, Jilly Watson, recently posted a video on her Instagram story. They were at a party and were seen dancing and enjoying their night out. What took all the limelight was the huge diamond ring that Jilly was wearing.
The Browns had a voluntary minicamp in March where Watson showed up alongside the other two quarterbacks, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel. Monken got the opportunity to work with them for the first time, and he walked away with a lot of positives.
The new head coach described the three-day experience as “awesome.” Monken was impressed by the overall atmosphere at the minicamp, and during a press conference, he outlined that all three quarterbacks showed a lot of potential.
“Being out there with the guys and getting a little bit of a feel for who we have on our roster, and I thought all three quarterbacks, at times, you could see positives in their games. And learning a new system, and they’ve been awesome in the meeting rooms and on the field,” he said.
“Deshaun looked really good at times, and there are things he gotta work on. Same with Shedeur and Dillon,” Monken said.
Declaring Watson as the starting quarterback isn’t as easy as it sounds because the Cleveland fans aren’t fond of him.
Browns will Ease Fans into the Deshaun Watson Decision
As per Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com, the Browns are leaning toward Watson being their starting quarterback. Watson is more experienced than the other two options, but he hasn’t played a game since 2024.
In addition to that, Watson is not popular among the fans, and the franchise has no idea how they’ll react to the decision.
“The Browns recognize that Watson is unpopular with many fans, but they believe fans will come around if he wins the job and plays well,” Cabot wrote. “They know they have to ease fans into the notion of Watson starting again, and they do have a plan, which includes Watson addressing the media at some point for the first time since he first ruptured the Achilles in October of 2024.”
It’s not going to be an easy thing to pull off but the Browns will have to take these steps in order to get their team ready in time for the next season.
