Ed Orgeron was recently hired as a special assistant to recruiting and defense. He served as the head coach of the LSU Tigers from 2016 to 2021. Being a part of Lane Kiffin’s unit marks a new beginning in Orgeron’s long coaching career.
The 64-year-old has been married and divorced twice. His first wife was Colleen Orgeron, and they were married from 1992 to 1994. In 1997, Orgeron married Kelly Orgeron. They first met on a blind date.
The couple was married for 23 years and has three boys. The former LSU head coach filed for divorce from his wife in 2020. Their divorce made national headlines due to Orgeron’s popularity and the LSU name attached to him.
As per the court documents, Orgeron wanted the exclusive use of their home in Baton Rouge, which they previously shared. The coach stated that he had no issues with Kelly taking the exclusive use of their other home in Louisiana.
It wasn’t a messy divorce like other famous couples, but it still made headlines. At the time, Orgeron was on cloud nine with his championship win with LSU in 2019. After Orgeron’s abrupt departure from LSU, there was a buyout dispute with his ex-wife.
In a major Louisiana Supreme Court ruling, Kelly was awarded $8.13 million from Ed’s $17 million LSU buyout. The court determined she was entitled to half the buyout because the contract extension was signed while they were still legally married.
Orgeron has three sons: twin boys, Cody and Parker, and an older stepson, Tyler Spotts-Orgeron. All three have pursued football and coaching careers.
Kelly Detailed How She Met Ed Orgeron and Got Married
The story of how Ed Orgeron met his former wife is very interesting. During a conversation with The Advocate, Kelly detailed how she first met Orgeron. They met through a mutual friend and were married within two months.
“I’d hired this dietitian to work with my patients, and she and her husband knew Ed,” Kelly said. “She told me, ‘I’ve got this friend you’ve got to meet.’ Tyler was 3 at the time. I told her I wasn’t interested.”
At the time, Orgeron was with Syracuse, and they were going to the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. Kelly went to Memphis and got introduced to Orgeron for the first time.
“Two months later, we eloped and got married. That was not my normal, nor his.”
Kelly said that their families thought they were crazy to get married so soon in their relationship.
