The Buffalo Bills’ season came to an end in the Divisional Round against the Denver Broncos, and with that, Sean McDermott’s stint as their head coach was over. McDermott’s firing came as a shock to many.
He joined the Bills as head coach in 2017. In his nine seasons, he made eight playoff appearances. However, the Bills never moved past the conference championship rounds during his run as their head coach.
In what has now become his final game, the Bills lost because of a controversial interception ruling. Fans were quick to point out that bad officiating robbed the Bills of a chance to win their first conference championship since 1993.
None of that matters to the Bills owner, Terry Pegula. As soon as the game was over and the players went to their locker room, Pegula entered the room with the intention of firing McDermott. After that, he held a nearly hour-long press conference, during which he criticized several aspects of the franchise, including some of their players.
As for his decision to fire McDermott, Pegula said that the loss against Denver helped him make that call. Interestingly, he made that decision all by himself, and it wasn’t pre-planned.
“I did not fire Coach [McDermott] based on a bad officiating decision. If I can take you into that locker room, I felt like we hit the proverbial playoff wall year after year — 13 seconds, missed field goal, the catch. So, I just sensed in that locker room, like, where do we go from here with what we have? And that was the basis for my decision,” he said.
Pegula admitted that one bad decision kept the Bills away from going forward for the title.
Sean McDermott Lost His Job, and Brandon Beane Was Promoted
Pegula’s press conference has been making waves. Many fans and media personalities believe that he shouldn’t have aired some of his dirty laundry in public and that he shouldn’t have thrown people under the bus.
But it wasn’t all negative, not for everyone at least. Brandon Beane received a promotion from Pegula. When asked about that decision, he stated that the team’s continued success and stability were major factors.
Beane became the Bills’ general manager in 2017. He has now been promoted to the role of president of football operations. Interestingly, Beane has decided not to hire anyone else as general manager and hold both positions simultaneously.
